The short answer
Stem cells are often marketed as “anti-aging”. The reality is more modest: they are being studied in age-related frailty and some inflammation markers, with preliminary results, and there is no evidence that they extend life or reverse ageing. At YOU Medicine in El Poblado, Medellín, we explain what the research says and start with what has solid support for ageing healthily.

What “longevity” means in medicine
Longevity medicine aims to increase the years lived in good health, not just years of life. That means keeping muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance, memory and independence. It is measured with concrete data: blood pressure, glucose, lipids, body composition, grip strength, walking speed and sleep quality.
What has the most evidence for ageing well
No injectable treatment replaces these foundations. Any serious longevity plan starts by measuring and improving them.
- Regular exercise combining strength, aerobic endurance and balance.
- Enough good-quality sleep.
- A diet based on minimally processed foods with adequate protein.
- Not smoking and moderating alcohol.
- Controlling blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and weight, with age-appropriate preventive check-ups.
- Social connection and mental activity.
Stem cells and ageing: what is being researched
With age, tissue repair capacity declines and low-grade chronic inflammation rises. Researchers are therefore studying whether mesenchymal stem cells, through their effects on inflammation, might help age-related frailty. Some small trials have reported changes in walking tests or inflammatory markers in some participants.
These are preliminary results: few patients, short follow-up and no confirmation in large studies. There is no evidence that stem cells extend lifespan, rejuvenate organs or reverse biological age. We therefore consider them investigational for this purpose.
Exosomes, drips and other promises
Alongside stem cells you will see exosomes, IV drips and peptide combinations sold as “cellular rejuvenation”. Some have specific aesthetic or medical uses, but their effectiveness for extending life is not proven. Be wary of any package promising measurable changes in “biological age” without explaining how it is measured and what evidence supports it.
How we approach longevity at YOU Medicine
- A medical consultation reviewing your history, medications and goals.
- Lab tests and assessment of strength, body composition and risk factors, as appropriate.
- A written plan with realistic priorities: exercise, sleep, nutrition and risk-factor control.
- Only if it makes sense and you ask, an informed conversation about investigational therapies, with their risks, product documentation and alternatives.
- Follow-up that measures change with data, not feelings.
What a longevity assessment can include
The goal is to move from “I want to age better” to three or four measurable priorities we can track over time.
- A full medical and family history, plus a review of medications and supplements.
- Blood pressure, resting heart rate and, where appropriate, an ECG.
- Blood tests: glucose and HbA1c, lipid profile, kidney and liver function, blood count, vitamin D and others as indicated.
- Body composition and measures such as grip strength, walking speed and balance.
- A review of sleep, stress and weekly physical activity.
- A reminder of age-appropriate screening (for example colon, breast or prostate cancer) to coordinate with your primary care doctor.
Peptides, hormones and drips: how to evaluate them
Longevity medicine offers many products: peptides, hormone therapies, IV drips, NAD+ and more. Some have specific medical uses when a deficiency is proven; others rest mainly on animal studies. Before using any of them, ask what measurable problem it aims to improve, what human evidence exists, what the risks are and how you will measure whether it works.
Risks to know about
Giving cells or biological products to a healthy person is never neutral. There are risks of infusion reactions, infection and long-term effects that are still unknown. In healthy people, the balance between an unproven benefit and a real risk deserves particular care. The FDA and ISSCR both advise caution about clinics selling stem cells as anti-aging.
Who this consultation is for
Adults who want a medical plan for healthy ageing and want to understand what is true about regenerative therapies. It is not for anyone looking for an injection to replace habits, nor for people with active cancer, pregnancy or uncontrolled conditions, who first need their specialist's care.
Questions to ask any clinic (including us)
In Colombia, INVIMA oversees medicines and biological products, and healthcare providers register in REPS. A general registration does not mean a specific treatment is approved for your condition, and it is not the same as US FDA approval. Always ask for the documentation of the specific product in your plan.
- Is the provider registered in Colombia's REPS (Ministry of Health) and are the doctors listed in ReTHUS?
- Exactly where do the cells or product come from, which laboratory processes them, and what INVIMA documentation exists for that product and use?
- What dose, route and number of sessions are proposed, and why?
- What evidence exists for my specific condition, what is still unknown, and what are the alternatives?
- Who follows me up once I am home, and what happens if there is a complication?

Frequently asked questions
Do stem cells reverse ageing?
There is no evidence that they reverse ageing or extend life. They are being studied in age-related frailty with preliminary results.
What helps most with ageing well?
Regular exercise including strength training, good sleep, a sound diet, not smoking and controlling blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol. These have the strongest support.
Do you offer anti-aging stem cells?
We do not present them as anti-aging. If you ask, we can have an informed conversation about investigational therapies, with risks and alternatives, after a medical evaluation.
Can biological age be measured?
Tests such as epigenetic clocks exist, but their use to guide individual treatment is still limited. We prefer to measure concrete clinical markers.
How much does a longevity plan cost?
It depends on the tests and follow-up you choose. After the first consultation we give you a written personalized quote.
Can I consult in English or by video?
Yes. We work in English and Spanish, and the first conversation can be a video call.
