    # Profhilo in Medellín: The Skin Booster for Hydrated, Firmer-Looking Skin Without a "Done" Look

More and more patients come to YouMedicine in El Poblado, Medellín, asking for the same thing: they want their skin to look fresher, more hydrated and a little firmer, but they don't want to change the shape of their face. For many of them, the answer we talk about is Profhilo, an injectable skin booster made from hyaluronic acid. This guide explains what Profhilo is, how it differs from fillers and Botox, who it may suit, and what a medically supervised treatment looks like.

Every treatment at YouMedicine starts with a medical consultation. Profhilo can improve skin quality for many people, but results vary and no treatment can promise a specific outcome.

    What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable gel made of a very high concentration of pure hyaluronic acid, the same substance your skin naturally uses to hold on to water. It combines two types of hyaluronic acid, a heavier form and a lighter one, joined through a heat-based process rather than the chemical cross-linkers used in most fillers.

Because of this, Profhilo behaves differently from a classic filler. Instead of staying in one spot to add volume, it spreads gently under the skin after injection. The goal is to hydrate the skin from within and support its own collagen and elastin, an approach often called "bio-remodelling."

You can read more on our hyaluronic acid treatments page and our Profhilo page.

Profhilo vs. fillers vs. Botox: what's the difference?

It's easy to mix these treatments up, so here is a simple way to think about them:

    • Botox (botulinum toxin) relaxes specific muscles to soften expression lines, such as frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet. It doesn't hydrate the skin.
    • Dermal fillers add volume or structure to specific areas, such as the lips, cheeks or jawline.
    • Profhilo works on the overall quality of the skin: hydration, glow, texture and mild laxity. It doesn't freeze muscles and isn't designed to add volume.

Many patients combine them. For example, Botox for the forehead and Profhilo for dull, dehydrated skin on the cheeks and neck. Your doctor will explain which combination, if any, makes sense for you.

Who may be a good candidate?

Profhilo is often considered for people who notice:

    • Dull, dehydrated or tired-looking skin
    • Early loss of firmness on the lower face or jawline
    • Fine "crepey" lines on the neck, décolleté or hands
    • Skin that has changed after weight loss, stress or years of sun exposure

Medellín's strong year-round sun and altitude can speed up visible skin aging, so many of our patients, both locals and international visitors, are looking for ways to improve skin quality gently.

Profhilo is not a replacement for a facelift, and it won't lift heavy, sagging skin. It's also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if there is an active skin infection where it would be injected, or with certain medical conditions. That's why a proper medical evaluation comes first.

    What to expect during treatment

    1. Consultation. Your doctor reviews your medical history, medications, allergies, skin type and goals, and confirms whether Profhilo is the right option or whether something else would serve you better.
    2. The session. The skin is cleaned and the doctor places small amounts of product at a few precise points on each side of the face (or on the neck), using a fine needle or cannula. The procedure usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes.
    3. A second session. A typical plan is two sessions about four weeks apart. Your doctor may suggest a different plan based on your skin.
    4. Maintenance. Many patients choose a maintenance session every several months to keep the effect.

Right after treatment it's normal to see small bumps where the product was placed. They usually settle within hours to a day as the gel spreads. Mild redness, tenderness or small bruises can also happen. Your doctor will explain aftercare and what to watch for.

    When will I see results?

Some patients notice their skin looks more hydrated within the first couple of weeks, while changes in firmness and texture tend to build gradually after the second session. Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. Good daily habits help a lot: sunscreen every day, enough sleep, hydration and a gentle skincare routine.

    Combining Profhilo with other treatments

When it makes sense, your doctor may suggest combining Profhilo with other skin-quality treatments as part of a personalized plan, such as microneedling, mesotherapy for skin quality or anti-wrinkle injections. Some patients also add an IV drip like You Glow to support how they feel overall. Timing matters, so these are always planned by your doctor.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is Profhilo a filler?

Not in the usual sense. It's made of hyaluronic acid like many fillers, but it is designed to spread and hydrate rather than add volume to one area.

    Does Profhilo hurt?

Most patients describe a brief stinging feeling. Only a few injection points are needed, and the session is short.

Will it change the shape of my face?

No. The goal is fresher, more hydrated-looking skin, not a different shape.

    Is there downtime?

Most people return to normal activities the same day, though small bumps can be visible for a few hours. Avoid intense exercise, saunas and alcohol for the first 24 hours unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Can I get Profhilo during a trip to Medellín?

Often yes. If you can't stay for the second session, your doctor will plan a schedule that fits your trip.
