Botox Aftercare: Exercise, Alcohol, Sleeping and Flying After Botox in Medellín

# Botox Aftercare: Exercise, Alcohol, Sleeping and Flying After Botox in Medellín
After Botox, the usual advice is to stay upright for about four hours, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for the rest of the day, and skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and intense heat for around 24 hours. Flying soon after treatment is generally considered acceptable, as there is no good evidence that cabin pressure moves the product, but always follow the specific advice your doctor gives you.
This guide brings together the most common aftercare questions, with a section for people who travel to Medellín for treatment.

Why does aftercare matter after Botox?
Botulinum toxin, often known by the brand name Botox, is placed in specific muscles to soften expression lines. In the first hours after the injection, the product is binding to nerve endings in the treated muscles. Most aftercare advice aims to keep it where it was placed during that time and to reduce swelling and bruising.
Aftercare is simple, and most people return to normal routines the same day. Learn more about the treatment on our Botox in Medellín and anti-wrinkle injection pages.
What should you do in the first 24 hours?
- Stay upright for about four hours. Avoid lying down flat or bending over for long periods.
- Do not rub, massage or press the area for the rest of the day, including facial massage, tight headbands and pressing on the area when applying products.
- Move your face normally. Some doctors suggest gently using the treated muscles, such as frowning and raising your eyebrows, in the first hours. Follow your doctor's advice.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for about 24 hours. A gentle walk is usually fine.
- Avoid alcohol for about 24 hours, as it can increase the chance of bruising.
- Avoid heat, including saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and long hot showers, for about 24 hours, and limit strong sun for a few days.
- Hold off on facial treatments such as facials, peels, microneedling or laser in the area for at least a week, unless your doctor says otherwise.
If you usually take anti-inflammatory medicines or supplements that thin the blood, ask your doctor before stopping or continuing them. Do not stop any prescribed medication on your own.
When can you exercise after Botox?
Most clinics advise waiting about 24 hours before intense workouts such as running, weight training, cycling or hot yoga. Exercise raises blood flow and often involves bending over or pressure from equipment like goggles or helmets. Light walking is generally fine on the same day.
Can you drink alcohol after Botox?
Alcohol can widen blood vessels and increase the chance of bruising. Many doctors suggest avoiding it for about 24 hours before and after treatment.
How should you sleep after Botox?
On the first night, many doctors suggest sleeping on your back if you can, with your head slightly raised, and avoiding pressing your face into the pillow. Make sure the four-hour upright period has passed before going to bed.
Can you fly after Botox?
This is one of the most common questions from visitors to Medellín. Flying after Botox is generally considered acceptable, and there is no good evidence that changes in cabin pressure move botulinum toxin. However, a few practical points help:
- Allow some time if you can. Many doctors suggest leaving at least a day or two between treatment and a long flight, mainly so any swelling or bruising can settle and so a review is possible if needed.
- Avoid pressure on your face. Sleeping against the window or using a tight eye mask or travel pillow that presses on the treated area is best avoided on the first day.
- Stay hydrated and limit alcohol on the flight.
- Plan your follow-up. Results take time to appear, so think about how you will contact the clinic once home.

When will you see the result?
Botox does not work instantly. Most people start to notice a change after about three to five days, with the full effect at around two weeks. The effect then gradually wears off, typically over about three to four months. For this reason, many clinics book a review at around two weeks, and visitors should ideally plan their stay with this in mind. What side effects are normal, and when should you call the clinic?
Mild redness, small bumps at injection points, slight swelling, tenderness and small bruises are common and usually settle within hours to a few days. A mild headache can also occur.
Contact your clinic promptly if you notice drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow, an uneven result that does not improve after two weeks, or any symptoms that worry you. Seek urgent medical care for difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, or widespread muscle weakness, which are rare but serious.
